Nigeria’s citizenship issue is too dependent on State of Origin. As Bala Usman a Nigerian historian warned, this constitutional definition of citizenship would “make ethnicity – indeed a deepened form of ethnicity akin to racism.”
Why should an individual who was raised in Lagos, worked in Lagos all his life and now raises a family of his own in Lagos feel that he has to return to his state of origin if he wishes to represent his people?
The “state of origin” concept really gets in the way of Nigerians learning to live together and seeing ourselves as a true nation.
10,000 signatures are being requested so this can be taken to the Nigerian Congress to debate.
